The Road Back

“A splendid love story, so beautifully told.” Colin Dexter O.B.E.

When Patricia accompanies her father, Major George Carstairs, on a trip to Ladakh, north of the Himalayas, in the early 1960s, she sees it as a chance to finally win his love. What she could never have foreseen is meeting Kalden – a local man destined by circumstances beyond his control to be a monk, but fated to be the love of her life.

Despite her father’s fury, the lovers are determined to be together, but can their forbidden love survive?

A wonderful story about a passion that crosses cultures, a love that endures for a lifetime, and the hope that can only come from revisiting the past.

If you like unusual settings for your romantic fiction, then this ticks all the boxes. Liz Harris’s descriptions of Ladakh make me feel like I’ve been there.

The story is a dual time-frame narrative set in the 1990’s and the 1950’s, and is essentially about a young woman (Amy) and her search for her roots. It flashes back to her mother Patricia’s story, when she travels to Ladakh with her closed-off, rather forbidding father. Patricia soon finds she is drawn to Kalden, who is native to the area and destined for the monastery.

Love blossoms, but of course such a relationship cannot possibly survive.
Or can it?

Amy must find out the answers.

What I loved about this book was the wealth of detail about life in Ladakh. This was explained in a way that didn’t hold up the story, but at the same time managed to ground the reader in the time and place. Suddenly, repairing water holes with rags, or drinking salty butter tea became fascinating!
Highly recommended.  (Fictionreader, Amazon Review)

Novel Background and Inspiration

My debut novel, THE ROAD BACK, first published by Choc Lit in 2012, was inspired by an album of words and photos compiled by my late uncle after his visit to Ladakh in the mid 1940s. I’ll never forget the bolt of excitement I felt as I read through the album and knew that this would be a wonderful location in which to set a novel.
